Autumn

Specific to temperate zones, autumn is one of the four seasons of the year. It follows summer and precedes winter. The days get shorter and temperatures gradually drop. The weather is mostly cloudy, rainy, and windy. But some days can be sunny and mild. Indian summer (in Canada) or Saint Martin’s summer (in Europe) refers to a bright and particularly mild period, with temperatures close to those of summer, which can occur until mid-November.
In french, the name for this season appeared quite late (12th-13th century). Before that, the word “gain” was used, based on the original meaning of the word: to gain. While in today’s society, autumn is more associated with loss, in the world of agriculture, it is a period of maturity. In fact, in most languages, the term is closely related. It is the season for harvesting corn and sunflowers, but also all kinds of fruits: apples, pears, quinces, chestnuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, grapes, and vegetables such as mushrooms and squash. This was a crucial period in the past, as the more abundant the harvests, the less the population suffered from hunger in winter.
The light is more oblique, and this is the time when many species prepare for the cold season. Apart from a few species known as marcescent, trees lose their leaves. They have already recovered the useful substances from them, which will be stored until the beginning of spring. The leaves lose their chlorophyll, which is responsible for their green color, and other pigments that were previously hidden, such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and anthocyanins, take over.
It is this aspect of autumn that particularly interests me in my work on the colors of the world. All these shades of beige, yellow, gold, red, and rust, which gradually replace the green, are a beautiful source of inspiration, especially when they sing in the sunlight.
