Birds

Whether from Europe or other continents, brightly coloured or more muted, the colours of birds’ plumage are a source of enchantment.

Survivors of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, modern birds are the only current representatives of theropod dinosaurs. Birds are bipedal, have wings, plumage and a toothless beak.

In 2020-2021, there were between 10,700 and 11,150 species of birds, including 9,700 wild species. More than half are passerines. All birds are oviparous.

At the beginning of the 21st century, 12% of bird species are recognised as endangered and at least 40% of them are experiencing a decline in their population. The main causes of extinction are the disappearance of insects, one of their main food sources, habitat loss and the use of pesticides.

Although the anatomy of the vast majority of birds makes them capable of flight, there are still a few that cannot fly. Birds inhabit all environments, from the polar ice caps to equatorial forests and deserts. This adaptability is reflected in their size, which ranges from the 5 cm Elena’s hummingbird to the African ostrich, which can reach 2.75 m in height.

Some species perform very well in animal intelligence tests. For example, parrots and corvids are capable of using tools.

The diversity of sizes is also reflected in the colours of their plumage, which I find particularly interesting as a source of inspiration for my creations.
